Guidelines for Finding Lawyers Online |
If yours is a complex or contested divorce, search for a family lawyer through the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, whose family lawyer members are considered by many to be the best in their field. To search for an Academy lawyer:
- Go to www.aaml.org.
- Click on "Directory Search," usually located on the left side of the homepage.
- When the "Locate an Attorney Search" page appears, skip the "Last Name" field, type the name of your city, select your state in the drop down menu and submit your search. A list of lawyers should appear.
- Click on the names of the family lawyers to view their profiles and find their telephone numbers.
- Read our Guidelines for First Telephone Calls to Lawyers, then place your calls to the selected lawyers.
If your search doesn’t return any results, try again, but search for lawyers in a major city nearby.
If you live in California and yours is a complex or contested case, you can also find a family lawyer through the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists. The Association is made up of family law specialists, certified by the State Bar of California, who are also considered by many to be the best in their field. To find an Association lawyer:
- Go to www.acfls.org.
- Click on the “Member Directory Search,” usually located in the top, right corner of the homepage.
- When the "Search Criteria" page appears, specify your city, state and region then click "Submit." A list of lawyers should appear.
If your divorce is reasonably simple, use LexisNexis Martindale–Hubbell’s "Lawyer Locator." LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell is a private business that, among other things, maintains an extensive, national lawyer directory. To use the Lawyer Locator:
- Go to www.martindale.com.
- Click on the "Advanced Search" button, usually located in the upper, middle portion of the homepage.
- Enter your city, county, and state, and specify any language requirements.
- Find the "Areas of Practice" menu, choose "Family Law" then click on the "Search" button. A list of lawyers should appear.
- Browse the list of lawyers and find those whose practice is dedicated exclusively, or almost exclusively to family law.
- Click on the names of the family lawyers to view their profiles and find their telephone numbers.
- Read our Guidelines for First Telephone Calls to Lawyers, then call the selected lawyers.
If your divorce is reasonably simple, you may also find a lawyer through your state and/or local bar association lawyer referral service. State bar associations license, govern and discipline lawyers and some, like local bar associations, make lawyer referrals to the general public. To find a lawyer referral service in your city or state:
- Select your state in the drop down menu below. If your state and/or local bar associations offer online lawyer referral services, links to the services should appear. Click on the link for the service in or near your city.
- If your state and/or local bar associations have online referral forms, the linked forms should appear. Fill out the form and request a family lawyer referral. If you don’t want to use the online form, call the lawyer referral service instead.
- If your state and/or local bar associations have online lawyer search engines, a search menu should appear. Fill in the information requested (e.g., city, state, practice areas (e.g., dissolution or family law)) and submit your criteria. A list of lawyers should appear. If your search doesn’t return any results, try again but expand your search to include a major city nearby.
