Thinking About Divorce

For those of you who are on the fence about whether to end your marriage, I wanted to share the title of a book I stumbled on this week: All you Need is Love and other Lies about Marriage.

I haven’t read the book yet, but intend on doing so because the author, psychiatrist John Jacobs, makes a logical case. “Dr. Jacobs believes that virtually everyone has significant problems at some time in their marriage. The sustained, successful marriage requires consciously implemented strategies over a long haul that assume each partner will share a realistic and reasonable view of the structure and intricacies of the marital bond.” In other words, Dr. Jacobs believes marriages today are strained by the world around them and in order for a union to survive, husbands and wives must realize this and come up with a plan for the long haul. (No more fairy tale marriages with damsels and knights in shining armor.)

Dr. Jacobs’ theory seems reasonable, especially when I think of friendships or sibling relationships, which can experience ups and downs but still remain strong over time That said, I’m off to the bookstore to pick up a copy. In the meantime, if you’ve already read Dr. Jacobs’ book, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
