Last Night on Larry King Live: Celebrity Divorces Gone Wild

For those who may have missed it, the main topic on Larry King Live last night was divorce. And not just any old divorce, but knock down, kick em in the *** celebrity divorce. Most notable were Christie Brinkley’s (hell hath no fury like a woman scorned) divorce from her 47 year old architect, philandering (with his 18 year old office assistant, whom he paid $300,000 to keep quiet), porn watching (while married) husband; and New York Yankee’s A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez)’s impending divorce, which was filed by his wife and includes claims of adultery (with Madonna) and emotional abandonment (two long standing divorce “fault” grounds in archaic New York).

After watching clips of Christie Brinkley approaching the courtroom on her third day of trial with a maniacal, seemingly painted-on smile, and shots of her husband (what’s his name?) Peter Cook, who was referring to his wife as “Miss Brinkley” and doesn’t want to agree that HE will help his children with their homework, seemed ridiculous. Then to make matters worse, Christie, who fought to keep these divorce proceedings public (most celebrities aggressively push for privacy (i.e. Britney Spears)), demurely tells a reporter that she had, and continues to hope that the child custody issues will be settled out of court and far from public eye. Call me jaded, suspicious or on to her, but I doubt Christie will yank the plug on this divorce debacle and her tirade to humiliate annihilate her husband’s reputation until she feels vindicated for his transgressions (putting it mildly). Anyone interested in hiring architect Peter Cook to design their home with lots of space for their teenage girls? (Yeah, I didn’t think so.)

That said, can you blame the gal? I mean after all, she is a “SUPER” model coping with the failure of her fourth marriage and publicly dealing with the fact that her husband, who had at least one, maybe two affairs, spent thousands on Internet porn DURING their marriage and (perhaps worst of all) set up web cams in their houses to broadcast himself masturbating! Ikes! (He’s lucky he isn’t married to Lorena Bobbit (remember the lady who cut off her husband’s willy and tossed it out the window?).

BUT, given the fact that she has young children (per Larry King, 10 and 12 years old), is it really appropriate to air your dirty laundry in the media for all the world to see, including your children, their friends, their friend’s parents, their teachers…? (Can you think of a more humiliating thing to do to a 12 year old?) And with today’s technology, is it wise to memorialize dad’s disgusting ways and mom’s retaliation in Wikipedia or elsewhere online? I mean she’s made her point - he’s a pig - but is it really any of our business, and wouldn’t the most self-respecting and honorable thing to do be to place her children’s interests at the forefront of this battle instead of her revenge? I don’t know, call me old fashioned, but I’m thinking she probably shouldn’t win “mother of the year” award and more importantly, I’m not sure either of them should have custody of their children. Grandma? Grandpa?

Update: Christie’s scandalous divorce trial has come to an END! The hard core media coverage must have motivated hubby to settle. The only downside: the adulterous, slime ball still gets $2.1 million.

I just can’t blame Christie for this. In NY, court proceedings are public and the courtrooms are closed only in extraordinary circumstances. The burden was on Peter Cook to show why it should be closed and he didn’t make it.

The children’s humiliation isn’t Christie’s doing. Sure, she’s the woman scorned, but the dirty laundry airing isn’t on her–it’s on him. She wasn’t the one who uploaded obscene photos of him on the internet–he was. Sorry, I can’t fault a mother, or a father, for that matter, who does whatever is in her power to make sure that the abusive parent does not get custody.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Marinka. While I agree that an abusive parent should not have custody, I don’t know how taking his horrific acts more public can help the children. Yes, he caused their humiliation, but I think it can be made worse for the children.

Yes, most divorce cases are public unless the court agrees they should be private, but in this case like many celebrity divorces, I think the parents could have pushed hard for privacy.

No need to apologize for your opinion. Differences start dialogue!! And I’m glad you shared your thoughts.

    Warm Regards,
    Helene.
