Weekly Divorce Tip #31

Getting divorced does not need to be expensive, time consuming or a reenactment of World War II. Instead, it can be a civilized, relatively inexpensive affair that keeps reputations in tact and relationships manageable. All that is required is an agreement between you and your spouse to mediate your divorce with the help of a professional divorce mediator.

“Mediation is a private process where a neutral third person called a mediator helps the parties discuss and try to resolve the dispute. The parties have the opportunity to describe the issues, discuss their interests, understandings, and feelings, provide each other with information and explore ideas for the resolution of the dispute.”

“While some courts can mandate that certain cases go to mediation, the process remains voluntary in that the parties are not required to come to agreement. The mediator does not have the power to make a decision for the parties, but can help the parties find a resolution that is mutually acceptable. Only the parties themselves have the ability to resolve the dispute.”

Divorce mediation is an excellent alternative method for resolving your disputes if your husband is relatively open and you believe that with the help of a trained mediator, you and your spouse may be able to settle your differences amicably. This is not legal advice. You should consult an attorney if you have legal questions that relate to your specific divorce. Technorati Tags:
