5 Things To Do Before Filing For Divorce

If you’re ready to get the legal ball rolling and you’re handling your own divorce, do these 5 things before filing your court documents:

  1. Determine whether you satisfy the residency requirements for filing divorce in your state.
  2. If you do, confirm that you have sufficient “grounds” for divorce.
  3. If you satisfy the residency requirements and have sufficient grounds for divorce, identify the county family court closest to your home.
  4. Pick up a copy of your court’s divorce forms and filing instructions.
  5. Read and re-read the instructions and follow them to the T.

Where can you find the residency requirements and grounds for divorce? They can be found in your state’s divorce laws or, if you’re lucky, in your state court’s instruction packet that accompanies the divorce forms.

This article is not legal advice. You should consult an attorney if you have legal questions that relate to your specific divorce.
