Weekly Divorce Tip #3

The legal system and rules of procedure are very unforgiving. If you miss a filing deadline or fail to appear at a court hearing, you may suffer irreparable harm. A judge can rule against you in your absence and can refuse to give you a second chance. To avoid the risk of this happening to you, take time weekly to review your court documents, letters from lawyers and personal calendar to confirm dates and times of hearings, conferences, filing deadlines or meetings with your lawyer. Be vigilant about your schedule. Cross-reference it with your lawyer, mediator or court clerk as often as necessary to avoid missing important dates.
This article is not legal advice. You should consult an attorney if you have legal questions that relate to your specific divorce.
