The Indescribable Pain

Irrespective of whose decision it is, feelings of grief, despair, depression and a sense of failure often accompany divorce. These emotions are normal but can nonetheless be overwhelming and affect every part of your daily life. It’s important that you be aware of your feelings during divorce and gauge how much you can handle at any given time. For example, if your husband wants to spend time with you and your children and you aren’t ready, be honest about your feelings and decline your husband’s request. Also, if your friends are encouraging you to get out and start dating again, follow your heart. If it isn’t ready, take your time.

As you take time, keep in touch with the people you love. Your relationships with others can lift your spirits and remind you that you are loved and appreciated. This in turn will help you overcome grief, despair and depression. Also, make time for friends, keep up your social routines and spend quality time with your children. Understandably, you may not feel like doing this at first, but it is healthy to accept social invitations that will help you overcome the emotional affects of divorce and begin a new, brighter life. Finally, as you are going through the process remember, as inexplicable as the pain in divorce may be, it is temporary and in time, you will heal.
Words of Caution: If you’re unable to function emotionally for inordinate amounts of time, you may be suffering from depression that should be treated by a licensed health care provider. Please, contact your doctor or find a therapist to speak with as soon as possible.
