Finding Free Legal Services
We receive emails daily from women seeking information about specific divorce issues. In response to these requests, we publish our answers on the blog if they are helpful to others. This week, we received a number of requests for help finding free legal services. Hence we are publishing our response and will supplement it over the next two weeks with information about free legal services in the states not addressed below. Please note: this list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of the free legal services that may be available in your state. Thus, we recommend you conduct a Google search for “free legal services” in your “state” and visit LawHelp.org for additional information. Georgia Legal Services Program, Inc. provides family and domestic violence legal services to rural Georgians with no or low income. (Telephone: 404-206-5175)
Legal Aid Society of Hawai’i provides help in the area of family law to women who are struggling with various issues, including divorce, child custody, visitation, support, restraining orders and more. (Telephone: Listed by island on website.)
Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program (IVLP) “is a statewide network of volunteer attorneys who offer free legal representation to low income individuals in civil (non-criminal) matters.” Priority is given to victims of Domestic Violence. (Telephone: 800-221-3295 (in Idaho); 208-334-4510 (Boise area or outside of Idaho)) Check the Idaho Supreme Court’s Self Help Center website for information about additional free legal services available in Idaho.
CARPLS: Coordinated Advice & Referral Program for Legal Services “ is a legal aid hotline that provides legal advice, information and referral services over the telephone to low-income residents of Cook County, Illinois.” (Telephone: 312-738-9200)
Illinois Legal Aid Online has an extensive array of state specific articles and information that can help you find answers to your legal questions and possibly, free legal services in your county. (Contact must be made via the website contact form.)
Indianapolis Bar Association Free Legal Line provides “an opportunity for those in need of basic legal advice to speak to a qualified attorney by telephone.” It is a free service offered from 6-8 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month, except December. (Telephone: 317-269-2000)
Indiana Pro Bono Commission maintains an extensive list of organizations that provide legal services to low-income clients throughout Indiana.
Iowa Legal Aid provides legal services to low income women across the state. (Telephone: 800-532-1275)
Kansas Legal Services, “a statewide non-profit organization, helps low income Kansans by providing legal, mediation and employment training services.” They handle cases in the areas of consumer, employment, family, juvenile, health, housing, income maintenance and individual rights law. (Telephone: 800-723-6953)
Legal Aid Network of Kentucky offers a variety of programs to women in need across the state. Qualification is based on income, age, ethnicity or employment. (Telephone: available on website by program.)
Capital Area Legal Services Corporation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana provides legal services to low income women in divorce. (Telephone: 225-338-5264)
Pine Tree Legal Assistance provides free legal services to low-income candidates in Maine. (Telephone: 207-774-8211)
Legal Services for the Elderly Helpline provides free legal services to women over 60. If the helpline cannot answer your questions, a staff lawyer may be able to assist you. (Telephone: 800-750-5353)
