Domestic Violence Legal Help in Salt Lake

One of our readers recently asked for additional information on legal services available in Salt Lake, Utah. This request was made in response to our “Stop Domestic Violence” post, therefore, our response focuses on resources for finding free family and domestic violence legal services.

Utah Legal Services (801-328-8899) “is a nonprofit law office which provides legal help in non-criminal cases, free of charge, to those who qualify. ULS serves the entire state through a variety of locations.” ULS also offers free legal clinics across the state, and online pamphlets, which may be used to learn about specific legal issues, including Domestic Violence. See the Utah Domestic Law Handbook.

Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake (801-328-8849) “is a non-profit organization that promotes safety, stability and self-sufficiency for low income families and individuals, as well as victims of domestic violence, through effective, efficient legal advocacy and assistance.”

Utah State Bar Pro Bono Attorneys There are many generous lawyers who give their time and expertise to women who cannot afford to pay for legal services. The Utah State Bar commends these lawyers regularly, posting their names and state bar numbers on the State bar’s website. To find a pro bono lawyer, browse the list on the bar’s website via the link provided above. Locate their telephone numbers using the State Bar Member Directory or Yellow Pages. Call those in Salt Lake and determine if they can assist you. You may also contact the Utah State Bar’s Pro Bono Coordinator Brooke Bruno at 801-297-7049.

WORDS OF CAUTION: Always confirm that a lawyer who offers their legal services to you, is experienced in handling domestic violence or sexual assault cases. Also, confirm they are licensed to practice in your State and have no records of disciplinary action. Do this through the Utah State Bar’s Office of Professional Conduct.
