“Prenuptial” and “Agreement” are Not Bad Words

Here are ten reasons to sign a prenuptial (premarital) agreement

1. You love and respect yourself enough to protect your future.

2. You love and respect your fiancée such, that if you ever part ways you want the process to be simple, friendly and completed as quickly as possible.

3. The terms of your agreement do not need to say, “I get everything and you get nothing!” You and your fiancée can agree to divide everything equally or in any other way permissibly legal way.

4. You will learn a lot about your fiancé’s values while discussing the terms of your agreement.

5. If your fiancé won’t agree to terms you would like to include in your agreement, you can probably assume that he won’t agree to the same terms during your marriage or divorce.

6. After discussing the proposed terms of your agreement, you can change your mind about the marriage (before the wedding).

7. If your fiancé is a wealthy man, the terms of your agreement can give you more than you might be entitled to receive by law.

8. If you intend on giving up your career to become a stay at home mom after marriage, the terms of your agreement can provide a financial safety net that you might not otherwise have.

9. A bad divorce can costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and take years to finalize

10. You don’t truly know a man until you divorce him.

WORDS OF CAUTION: Even the most “air tight” prenuptial agreements can be challenged in court. If, however, they really are “air tight”, they shouldn’t sink. Thus, it is critical that you and your fiancé each hire and work with a family lawyer to prepare an agreement that complies with your state’s laws.
