Enforcing the Judgment Unfortunately, ex-husbands often try to avoid their responsibilities after divorce. This can make it difficult to actually receive what you were awarded in your divorce.

If your ex–husband doesn’t follow through on the court’s orders and you have a reasonable relationship, contact him and try to resolve the issue out of court. Remind him of his obligations and ask that he comply with the court order. If you give him the benefit of the doubt, you may be able to resolve the matter quickly and inexpensively.

If you don’t have a reasonable relationship with your ex–husband or he ignores your requests for compliance, call your lawyer and ask for help. Your lawyer may be able to file motions to expose his non-compliance and enforce the court’s orders. Alternatively, contact your local Child Support Enforcement Office and ask for help collecting child support payments. There aren’t any guarantees that your husband will abide by court orders in the future, but if enforcement is cost-effective and worthwhile to you, go for it.
