Child Support EnforcementEvery child is entitled to love and support from both parents, regardless of whether the parents are married or divorced. It is your responsibility to protect your child’s rights. |
If appropriate, take the steps necessary to establish and enforce child support payable by your husband or ex-husband. Do this as soon as your husband or ex-husband stops contributing to your child’s upbringing. To determine if you’re entitled to receive child support, speak with your family lawyer.
If you don’t have a lawyer, turn to The Child Support Enforcement Program for help. The CSE Program offers a wide variety of services to mothers including, but not limited to, locating non-custodial parents, establishing paternity, establishing and enforcing child support orders, and collecting child support payments. In addition to collecting child support from your husband or ex-husband, protect your child’s rights by working to your full ability. Don’t become or remain unemployed in an attempt to increase child support. Child support is for your child’s benefit, not yours. If you’re unable to support yourself and cannot work, take the steps necessary to obtain spousal support, disability benefits or any other source of income intended for your support.
